15/7/08 - Well plenty has been happening lately - here are a few of the stable stories :
* Our apprentice Alisha Winfield decided to move on recently after a few exciting years with us. We wish her all the best with her future.
* We have a trainee apprentice with us from Japan - his name is Uskay (but gets called evrything from Whiskey to Wiggle) and he speaks enough English to stay out of trouble. He came to us from Bryan Guy on the Gold Coast and is fitting in well.
* Probably the most exciting news was when the 8 Horse Walking Machine was installed a few weeks ago. It's out the back of the Pleystone Cresent Stables and is already proving very worthwhile. The horse's walk on it for between 10-30mins and can even get to a light trot. With walking the horses on the roads very dangerous, having this machine available will see the horses fitness improved with little to no impact on theri joints etc. Beside the fitness improvements, just their general health and well-being will improve as they get out of the boxes and stretch their legs in the fresh air. The installing of the Walking Machine has been planned for a while, we were just waiting on having the space for it and putting it in the budget.
* We have cleared quite a few horses out of the stables of late - it's always a shame to see them leave as we get quite attached to them. But time catches up with us all, and sometimes they say enough is enough. As we all know everytime you win a race the next race is even harder as you go up in class. But as one door closes another one opens, both for us and for you as owners. We have a nice team of young horses coming through and success like what we had on Sunday with our Double at Caloundra should continue. We found the E.I effected the lower class horses a lot more than the better horses. They say that horses that are genuine winners are stronger and tougher - this was so true with E.I.. The weaker horses seemed to lose there will to race - maybe time will cure that for them, but it can be expensive waiting for that to maybe happen.
24/4/08 - Master Illusion will be going for a hat-trick of wins when he tackles the C6 1400m race at the Gold Coast on Prime Ministers Cup Day Saturday 3rd May. His last 2 wins were at this track and distance so all looks good.
27/2/08 - Jockey Ryan Wiggins rode 3 winners at the Doomben meeting yesterday - Ryan has been ridning plenty of work, jump-outs and trials for us since his move to Qld a few months ago. He is riding Mistress of Dreams on Saturday and 4 more for us on Sunday. Congratulations Ryan and lets hope your good form continues!
22/2/08 - Bad news for our apprentice Alisha this morning. She was riding work for an outside trainer when the horse she was on reared up and off she went. Alisha broke her right arm and willl be out of action for about 4-6 weeks. Like us I am sure you all wish her a speedy recovery.
19/2/08 - The trials due on Thursday at Doombon have been cancelled due to pending inclement weather ??? There will now be trials on the dirt organised at Eagle Farm on Thursday - there are also trials on the grass planned for next Tuesday at Eagle Farm. We will be deciding which horses trial on which day tonight and let you know asap.
13/2/08 - The trials were washed out yesterday at Eagle Farm. The next suitable trials are at Doomben next Thursday. Keep an eye on Stable Update for your horse.
06/02/08 - Les Ross Racing is excited to be associated with a new venture "Pacific Thoroughbreds". They have 7 horses already on the go of which 2 of them are in work with us. Dodge County is a 2yo gelding by Dodge and is a 3/4 brother to the very well performed "Hard to Catch". Monashee Gold is a 2yo gelding by Monashee Mountain. Both these horses have been in work for about 6 mths and have now got to the trial stage.
Darren Hudson who is the Managing Director has had horses with us for some time. For more details of his business of Syndication Management go to his website www.pacificthoroughbreds.com.au
04/02/08 - A nice win yesterday by Dance Machine at Caloundra. This horse came to us about 3 months ago from another trainer and had a "wayward" reputation. We have had 3 starts with now a 4th a 3rd and a win! It was a another great ride by Ric McMahon who has had 4 rides for us since the resumption of racing for 3 wins, not a bad strike-rate.
We have had a quiet start to the post E.I season, having just our 11th starter yesterday. We now have had 3 wins, 1 third and 2 fourths from these runs. We have 29 horses nominated to trial at Eagle Farm on Tuesday 12th Feb, so expect us to have plenty of runners by the end of the month.
20/1/08 - A great win on Saturday to Simplex, he was our last winner for 2007 ( 30/12/07 ) and our first winner for 2008. He showed plenty of ability as a 2yo, winning the Caloundra Classic in 2006. An injury kept him out of the game as a 3yo but the patience has paid of for the owners and the stable.
A super ride by Ric McMahon to put the horse in the perfect position to then produce the goods. Simplex had E.I and Les decided to keep him in steady work and then bring him back slowly into racing.
15/1/08 - We had the equal 3rd fastest horse at the breeze-up MM sales today at the Gold Coast. The Secret Savings Gelding was only 1 hundreth of a second away from the second quickets time, and just 2 tenths of a second from the fastest done by Tale of the Cat Colt. Our apprentice Alisha Winfield was on the job keeping the Gelding together nicely whilst still completing a super quick time. Our other apprentice Dave Keogh also rode on the day to ensure our 7 2yo's went through the gallops in good order.
The breeze-ups are conducted on the inside dirt at the Gold Coast, and are timed over the last 200m. Last year we had the fasted time and it was very satisfying today once again be at the pointy end of the field. Lets hope the sale brings a nice result for both our stable and the owners who have put a lot of hard work into the young horses to get them to this stage. Also thanks to Kolora Stud who have assisted both at the breeze-ups and along the way.
For a full list of the times go to - http://www.magicmillions.com.au/pdf/08GHTBreeze%20Up%20Times.pdf
14/1/08 - We have 7 horses at the Magic Millions "Breeze-Up" sales on tomorrow (Monday 15th) and Tuesday - if you remember last year we had the fastest horse and we hope to be able to have the same this year.
It is a bit quiet on the racing front at the moment, but that is all about to change. As you read below we had 26 horses jump-out last week, and will have a similar number this week. All these horses will be heading then to trials and most of them races in the next 3-6 weeks.
11/1/08 - This week we had 16 horses jumpout on Tuesday, and another 11 jumpout yesterday. It was very pleasing to see all the horses run well and the the line strong. It gives us plenty of confidence that our steady progress since E.I looks to be the right thing for the horses. We won plenty of the heats and even the horses not suited to the short sprint down the straight ran well and nearly every horse finished in the first 4. There will be more jumpouts next week - when your horse goes you will be advised by email of the report.
Our Apprentice Alisha had a nasty fall at Toowoomba last Sat night. She hit the ground hard and was knocked out briefly, but I am happy to advise she has no concerns and has had this week off under medical advice and will be back into it from next week.
19/12/07 - As you all know we have over 60 horses in work, and it is very busy each morning at track-work. We have put on a few more staff and all is going well. Our apprentice Alisha has chosen to have a month trial with another trainer, Robert Bradshaw, which should help her broaden her skills - they say a change is as good as a holiday!
As far as racing goes, we still only have the 4 horses race fit, which means for the next month or so it is quiet on the racing front. The other 60 horses are all on very similar plans, we should see them trialing and racing towards the end of February. The period from then on will be full-on, we will be expecting to have between 20-30 runners a week. Another point of interest is that we have 20 2yo's in work which is a lot more than normal, so look out for us in the 2yo races early next year.
It was pleasing to see the 2 horses race on Saturday, both having had E.I and worked through it. Both pulled up well and certainly needed the run. It all goes well for all the other horses that had E.I, as these horses all had a good spell we would hope they will return to racing in as good a condition as they were prior.
1/12/07 - Congratulations to our Apprentice Alisha Winfield on riding a winner last night in Toowoomba. Her first day back in the saddle for over 2 months it was a great reward for all her hard work of late. To give you an idea of her day, started at the Stable at 3.30am, rode trackwork from 4am -7am, worked in the stable til 9am, went to the pool with horses for a swim and knocked off about 10am. Drove to Toowoomba for the first of her rides at 4.30 in the afternoon, and drove home after her last getting back to Brisbane about 10pm. Now that's a big day!
Alisha's riding has really improved over the last 6 months, and it is great to see that the winning form she was in before the E.I outbreak is continuning on. With her 3kg claim at the Provincials she will be a handy asset for the Stable when we get back into full racing in a couple of months.
17/7/07 - Big win at Eagle Farm by Mistress of Dreams - click here for the full story
17/5/07 - Chris received a reduction in his penalty handed out by the Stewards today, in relation to the incident with trainer Steel Ryan. He had his 3 Month disquaification reduced to a 1 month suspension which is much better for his record. They did however add a $1,000 fine to the penalty.
Chris will be allowed back to work from next Thursday, so you will see him back amongst the horses then.
03/05/07 - Les attended the hearing today and below is the Stewards Report :
Stewards today inquired into the results of the analysts findings of a urine sample taken from WHATATUNE which competed in Race 8 at Eagle Farm on Wednesday 21 March 2007.The Queensland Government Racing Science Centre reported that the prohibited substance DIPYRONE was detected in the urine sample taken from WHATATUNE after finishing second on that day.Trainer L Ross was found guilty of a charge under AR178 in that he presented WHATATUNE to race at Eagle Farm on 21 March 2007 when the horse was found to have in its body a prohibited substance. After hearing submissions in relation to penalty, Trainer L Ross was fined the sum of $2,000. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account mitigating circumstances together with Mr Ross good record. In accordance with AR177 WHATATUNE was disqualified from Race 8 at Eagle Farm on 21 March 2007 and the judges placings were amended to:-

QUEENSLAND Racing web news: May 3
Les is satisfied that he was given a fair hearing and isn't going to appeal the decision. We thank you all for your support during this difficult period. The fact remains that Les raced the horse under advice given to him by a variety of sources that maintained that the drug used to treat the Colic condition would be clear form the horses system within 6 days. Whatatune went to the races on the seventh day after the treatment.
18/4/07 - Victorian Satellite Stable closes - due to a variety of reasons we have decided to close our operation that was based at Pakenham in Victoria. It was a mutual decision by both Les and the owner and one made with plenty of thought.
One of the positives to come out of the whole exercise was we got Les his wings, and there is no stopping him now!
23/3/07 - My Son Day returns to racing this weekend. Click here to read story on AAP.
20/3/07 - Congratulations to our apprentice Alisha Winfield who rode her first winner for the Stable today. At Ipswich in the Class 4 1200m she gave Sammy's Illusion the perfect ride. Getting him over from an outside gate she had the horse in the box seat and timed her run perfectly as they entered the straight.
Well done to Alisha, and to Les and the owners for having faith in her. Alisha rides all the trackwork for the horse and it was a great reward for all her hard work, and lets hope she has plenty more winners around the corner. There is a rumour that Alisha might have shed a little tear when she came back into the winners stall, if she did it was well deserved! Go to the photo gallery to see some great shots of the win.
12/3/07 - The Queensland Racehorse Owners Association are holding the 2007 Racing Carnival Ball on Friday 4th of May. The QROA alway put on a great show and if you would like more information click here. If you are interested in going and you want to get a table together let me know and I will try and help you fill the seats.
16/2/07 - Our first winner with our first starter from our new Victorian Stables. Les flew down last night to put the polish on all Chris's hard work and it is great for the stable and the owner to start off the best way possible. Arrowseep won the feature race of the day and if they didn't know who Les Ross was before, they will do now. It's also 4 winners since last Friday, thanks to Dans D'or, Commander love, Unleaded and now Arrowsweep!
11/2/07 - Commander Love winning yesterday at Caloundra was a big thrill for connections, before the horse came to us he had started 11 times without a placing. In his first 3 starts with us he has come 4th, 2nd and the win yesterday. Congratulations to the owners and well done to the team at Les Ross Racing for turning his form around. Make sure you check out the photos in the Photo Gallery.
9/2/07 - A great win yesterday for Dans D'or at Eagle Farm. All his runs this preperation have been impressive, including his recent 3rd against the best 3yo's in Qld. A super ride by Danny and he exploded away to put three lengths on the field in the last 200m. Check the photos in the Gallery
6/2/07 - It was great to get back in the winners circle firstly at Ipswich on Thursday, and then again on Saturday at Doomben. Congratulations to the connections of both Cecilaloysius and Demolir. With both our horses placing ant Caloundra on Sunday it topped off a solid few days, with of our 7 runners in 4 days we had 2 wins, 2 seconds and a third.
28/1/07 - After attending the Magic Million sale, Les did purchase a gelding that took his eye. He is by King of Danes (Danehill) out of the mare Tristrams Show, that Les trained. For more information on the horse go to our Horses Available section of the website.
27/1/07 - You all may have heard about our little expansion into Victoria. We have been granted a Trainers Licence through Racing Victoria and will have a small team of horses based at Stables near Pakenham Race-course. Predominantly the horses trained there will be for Mr Max Lang, and we have employed staff there and Les will oversee the operation by flying to Melbourne approx once a month.
So very soon you will see Les Ross trained horses at Victorian tracks, and hopefully we all will benefit from the experience and knowledge gained by this development. We will keep you all up to date as things happen, but the most important thing is there will be no significant changes in the way we train the horses here in Brisbane. Click to see article from Courier Mail.
29/12/06 - This is a bit late, but here are a few photo's from our Christmas Party Sunday week ago. Thanks to all those that attended, and hope you had an enjoyable day. To see the photo's click here.
26/12/06 - What a great day for the Stable at Eagle Farm. What a fitting way for the Les Ross Stable to celebrate Boxing Day by winning a double on our home track. Congratulations to the connections of both Dane To Tango and Donbodine, and to Danny Peisley and Bobby Ellisa for riding them both a treat in difficult conditions. It's good to see all that "Boxing" training that Les has been doing has been of benefit, and the fact that he rode both horses dressed in a Santa suit at Eagle Farm on Saturday may have just given them the spirit needed to win!
13/12/06 - The only winner from the Stable yesterday was young Ryan who won the "Golden Gloves" title for his age at Caboolture last night. Add that to his Wide Bay and Qld title, its been a great first year for Ryan as a boxer. Ryan is off for a break now, and Les is not sure if he will go out to Retsil Park or up to Craiglea!
23/11/06 - The Gold Coast Turf Club has changed the dress regulations for thier Members Area. In short you will no longer be allowed in this area with jeans etc, which in the past has been the common attire at both the Coasts. Click here to see the new standards.
