30th March 2006 : Q. “Whatthe” is a Nose Roll.
A. A nose roll is placed accross the nose of a horse just below the eyes to try and get the horse to keep its head down and and also to get it to extend its front legs. Horses like to see there legs in front of them when they run, and the Nose Roll, usually made of lambs wool creates an obstacle that requires them to lower their head to be able to see the ground and makes them stretch out their legs even further to see them as well. A simple an effective way of getting horses head down and to stretch out further their front legs.
