THE LOVE OF THE GAME

He’d mow a lawn or chop some wood, he’d box to some renown,

Just a home grown larrikin from a Queensland outback town.

Then, with a ton of motivation, he chose the racing game,

Bought an old ute and took on some horses

To chase his fortune and his fame.

At Cunnamulla and then to Miles, his team of horses grew,

Word was spreading about this bloke who trained winners –

And not just a few.

For he’d canvassed the people in our little town

To take up a challenge that he had set down,

“Buy me a horse, and if money you’re not making,

a refund I’ll give, it’s yours for the taking!”

So, there’s Johnny Thong the grocer, there’s Peter and there’s Kate

There’s a woman pumping petrol, a farmer and his mate,

A baker and a publican, a secretary and what’s more,

There’s a grazier and even, a manager of a store!

There’s retired friends from years ago, a long, long list I’m making

And Les has travelled far and wide as there were races for the taking!

Soon Brisbane was made to sit up and look at what the bush boy Les had done,

With horses of less calibre, he’d travelled to Brisbane and won.

So, an offer came to go to the city, he’s have to leave Miles – more is the pity.

Now the Chariot has been a real Smarty, and Sally can really Dance,

He enters his horses all well prepared, and gives them every chance.

Now his stables in Brisbane are growing and growing

And reports of his training are certainly glowing.

But remember, there are people in the bush not ONE thought would have taken

Of buying a horse and following horse racing.

And he left us a love of horses and the game, we’ll keep on racing

For Les, you are to blame.

You may say look what racing has done for Les Ross,

He’s in the city now, he is his own boss.

Living in Brisbane, he leads a good life, but that’s thanks to hard work

And a BLOODY GOOD WIFE!

Now don’t tell me that, not one word I’m taking

For an industry in our town was of Les Ross’ making.

It’s a different view we should be taking –
